Define the contact conditions first

Specify whether the part contacts food directly, the food type and the contact duration. List production and cleaning temperatures separately. A material name or colour alone is not evidence of suitability for a particular food application.

If you require documentation relating to FDA requirements or European Union legislation, identify the target market and requested document at the quotation stage. Do not assume blanket food-contact suitability for all APAFLON® products without verifying documentation that matches the grade, composition and conditions of use. Choose the product form for your part

• PTFE sheet: provide thickness, width, length and a cutting drawing.
• PTFE rods: specify diameter and length for solid round machining stock.
• PTFE tubes and pipes: specify outer diameter, inner diameter, length and connection requirements. Identify any pressurised or fitted assembly requirement separately.
• Custom machined PTFE parts: request a review based on your drawing, tolerances, surface requirements and quantity.

Information needed for a quotation

1. Part details: function in the machine, drawing or sample details, dimensions, tolerances and quantity.
2. Food contact: food type, direct or indirect contact, contact duration and frequency of use.
3. Operating conditions: normal and maximum temperatures, pressure or vacuum, movement and mating surface.
4. Cleaning cycle: cleaning agent, concentration, temperature and duration; include cleaning-in-place or sterilisation where applicable.
5. Documentation and traceability: target market, required declaration or test report, existing material code and batch traceability expectations.
6. Supply: delivery location, required date and repeat-order needs.

Frequently asked questions

Is every white PTFE part suitable for food contact?

Colour alone is not sufficient evidence. Request documentation that matches the specific grade and conditions of use.

Can an existing part be replaced using only a photograph?

A photograph can support a preliminary review. Dimensions, tolerances, material and quantity must be clarified for a firm quotation and production scope.

Why are cleaning conditions requested?

The production environment and cleaning cycle can differ. Both sets of conditions are needed to assess the enquiry.
