Unfilled vs Filled PTFE: A Material Selection Guide

Choosing a PTFE grade starts with the operating conditions, not the filler name alone. Compare the material composition with the load, sliding speed, temperature, chemical environment and mating surface of your application.

APAMEYA is the manufacturer; APAFLON® identifies its PTFE material brand. The grades below identify material compositions, not finished-part dimensions or stock availability.

Four APAFLON PTFE material options

Unfilled PTFE — APAFLON 100001

Composition: 100% PTFE.

Use this unfilled grade as a reference when comparing the requirements of your application with filled alternatives. Food-contact, electrical or other regulated requirements must be checked against the documentation for the specified material and intended use.

Carbon-filled PTFE — APAFLON 202501

Composition: 25% carbon + 75% PTFE.

Assess this carbon-filled grade against the actual load, motion, mating surface, temperature and chemical environment. The filler name alone does not establish the electrical or mechanical performance required by a particular application.

Glass-filled PTFE — APAFLON 501501

Composition: 15% glass fibre + 85% PTFE.

Consider this grade where hardness, wear and dimensional behaviour under load are relevant. Evaluate the mating surface, lubrication and chemical exposure together with the operating conditions before selecting the material.

Bronze-filled PTFE — APAFLON 404001

Composition: 40% bronze + 60% PTFE.

Evaluate this specific bronze-filled composition for the intended part geometry, load, speed, mating surface, lubrication and chemical environment. Technical values for a different bronze percentage must not be used as substitutes.

What determines the right PTFE grade?

  • Load and motion: static or dynamic duty, pressure, sliding speed and operating cycle.
  • Temperature and chemical exposure: normal and peak temperatures, process media and cleaning conditions.
  • Mating surface and lubrication: surface material, finish and whether the part runs lubricated or dry.
  • Geometry and tolerances: part dimensions, dimensional limits and installation requirements.
  • Documentation: any application-specific test, traceability or compliance requirements.

No grade is universally the best. Final suitability must be evaluated for the actual application; a general comparison does not replace the relevant technical data or application assessment.

Material code and part dimensions are different

An APAFLON code identifies the material grade. Specify the product form, dimensions, tolerances and quantity separately. For example, “APAFLON 202501, rod, diameter 40 mm × length 500 mm, 10 pieces” is an enquiry format, not a stock or delivery promise.

Information to include in your quotation request

  1. Material grade, if known; otherwise describe the application.
  2. Product form or a technical drawing of the finished part.
  3. Dimensions, tolerances and quantity.
  4. Temperature, chemical exposure, load or pressure and speed.
  5. Mating surface and lubrication conditions.
  6. Required documentation and requested delivery date.

Frequently asked questions

Is filled PTFE always better than unfilled PTFE?

No. The selection depends on the complete operating conditions and the properties required from the part, not simply on whether a filler is present.

Can I replace one filled PTFE grade with another?

Not solely on the basis of the filler name. Check the exact composition, relevant technical data and application requirements before making a substitution.

Can I request a quotation without knowing the APAFLON code?

Yes. Provide the part drawing or dimensions and the operating conditions so that material options can be assessed during the quotation process.
