What Is PTFE? Properties, Grades and Material Selection

PTFE stands for polytetrafluoroethylene. It is a fluoropolymer used in semi-finished stock shapes and machined engineering components. Selecting the right material requires more than a product name: temperature, load, speed, chemical exposure, part geometry and tolerances must be considered together.

Key Properties of PTFE

PTFE is considered for designs where low friction, chemical resistance or electrical properties are important. These general characteristics do not mean that every PTFE grade is suitable for every application.

• Chemical exposure: Specify the fluid, concentration, temperature and contact duration.
• Moving contact: Evaluate load, speed, counterface and lubrication together.
• Temperature: State continuous operating temperature, short-term peaks and thermal cycling separately. A single temperature limit must not be applied to all PTFE products.
• Dimensional behaviour: Account for creep, deformation under load and thermal expansion in the part design.

Unfilled or Filled PTFE?

Unfilled PTFE and carbon-, glass-fibre- or bronze-filled grades do not have identical technical properties. Filler type and content can affect wear, behaviour under load, dimensional stability and electrical properties. Improving one property does not mean that every property improves at the same time.

Product Forms and Dimensions

• PTFE rod: Specify outside diameter × length. APAMEYA can manufacture PTFE rods in diameters from 8 to 350 mm. Length, tolerances, grade and quantity are reviewed together at quotation stage.
• PTFE sheet: Specify thickness × width × length.
• PTFE film: Specify thickness × width × length or the required running length.
• Hollow cylindrical PTFE stock: Specify outside diameter × inside diameter × length.
• Machined PTFE components: Supply the drawing, tolerances, surface requirements, quantity and operating conditions.

Where Is PTFE Used?

PTFE grades may be considered for components requiring sealing, support, sliding or bearing functions. In construction machinery, hydraulic systems, pumps and compressors, part geometry and actual operating conditions guide material selection. A sector name alone is not evidence of suitability or a performance guarantee.

Quality Control Integrated into Production

At APAMEYA, quality control is an integral part of production. Every manufactured product undergoes quality control and does not proceed to packaging until the control process is complete. Dimensional and tolerance verification and visual inspection are performed in-house.

The technical properties of our products are also verified through periodic testing and assessment by independent organisations. This does not mean that each individual product or production batch receives a separate independent test. Enquiry-specific testing and documentation requirements are agreed at quotation stage.

All production stages, from the raw-material lot to the finished product, are tracked within a traceable system. This maintains the link between the raw-material lot, the manufacturing process and the resulting product, supporting retrospective traceability.
